Baxter Springs Tornado Update April 28, 2014 6:30


The tornado incident command staff had a briefing at 5:00.


At this time, Empire estimates 800 customers without service. They continue their efforts and hope to have more service intact later this evening.


The American Red Cross will maintain a shelter at the Baxter Springs Community Building (11th and East Avenue) throughout tonight, as will Trinity Worship Center (16th and Cleveland).


Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt was on scene today with his Consumer Protection Division. Roofers are required to be registered with the State of Kansas.
Contractors will have to go to 2402 Military Avenue on Tuesday morning, where they will register as a contractor, obtain a city permit, and verify they are permitted by the state.


The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division will also have staff monitoring the impact zone looking for any fraudulent contractors or those preying on residents who were already victimized by Sunday’s storm.


The Kansas Department of Revenue are waiving fees associated with obtaining replacement drivers licenses, car titles, etc…


Also, there is currently a burn ban issued by the Baxter Springs Fire Chief.
In addition, Mayor Randy Trease has issued a 9:00 curfew for the impact zone.
Law enforcement will continue to saturate the area tonight, working to insure any would be thieves / looters are dealt with accordingly.


The Cherokee County Health Department was on hand today, and will continue in the coming days to provide tetanus shots to responders, residents and volunteers.
Residents who have misplaced the WIC Vouchers can contact the Cherokee County Health Department at 620-429-3887 to have replacements issued.


On Tuesday, crews will be working to clear separated debris that is set along curbside. As a result, it is requested that residents and volunteers refrain from parking on the roadways, but rather pull into driveways where possible.


There will be a media briefing on Tuesday morning at 11th and Park (northeast corner to the north of the police department).  The briefing will be at 9:00.  Any relevant updates will be provided at that time.
