Law Enforcement Working to Keep Holiday Travel Safe

With an estimated 51 million people traveling for the Thanksgiving Holiday this week, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office will be working to help make sure family’s can get to and from their destinations safely.

“The night before Thanksgiving has developed the reputation of being the biggest drinking night of the year,” stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.  “As a result, deputies will be focused, not only Wednesday night, but throughout the holiday weekend, on identifying motorists who appear to be impaired, driving erratic, speeding, not being buckled up, or exhibiting other unsafe driving behaviors.”

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, in 2016, 200 people were injured and 6 killed on Kansas roadways during the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.

“This is the start of a special time of year, where family and friends come together.  We want this to be a joyous time, not a tragic one.  So, as you make your Thanksgiving Holiday plans, please make sure you plan to be safe by allowing yourself adequate time to get to your destination, buckling up and always having a designated sober driver, should your holiday plans include alcohol,” concluded Sheriff Groves.
